Guillermo Del Torro (Pacific Rim, Pan's Labyrinth) and Doctor Who's Steven Thompson have been hired to write HBO's pilot for the medical/morality/crime/cold war/psycho-thriller that is Naoki Urasawa's suspense manga, Monster.
Considered too sprawling to be a feature film, the thriller is about a global search by a disgraced doctor for the most evil sociopath that has ever lived - a twelve year old boy whose life he saved. The decision to save the boy's life life, instead of a visiting official, unleashes a hornet's nest that leaves the doctor battling to stop a plot of mass genocide.
Monster seems like a great idea for a TV series. It spans many years, and its manga and anime incarnations supply a large suite of interesting characters.
Viz published the Moster manga in North America, and released the television anime series on the US's SyFy channel from 2009 to 2010.
