Shonen Jump Theme Park Coming in July

$

A theme park centered on manga… my dream has come true.  Now I just have to get to Japan and live it.  J-World is opening the first ever Shonen Jump inspired indoor theme park in Tokyo, Japan.

Scheduled to open on July 11 on the third floor of the World Import Mart building in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district, it will include many interactive attractions based on the most popular manga.  Just a few of the manga that inspired these attractions are Gintama, Hunter x Hunter, Toriko, Dragon Ball, Naruto, and One Piece.

They definitely had me in mind when they announced the Dragon Ball attractions.  The first one is “Finding the Dragon Balls!” and will allow visitors to search for the elusive balls in a replica town setting. The second, and most exciting, is “Unleashing the Kamehamaha!”  This attraction allows you to stand in a “3D recreation chamber” and become saiyan by shooting giant laser beams with your hands.  How much better could it get.

They will also have a food court for those of us that have the time to stop and eat.

Anime Invasion - Popularity

Without a doubt, the most popular show of the season (and probably of the year) is Attack on Titan. It’s interesting to think about this because it leaves one to wonder exactly why it’s gained so much popularity. If compared to the popular show of last year, which was Sword Art Online, there are some similarities in the plot and many of the characters.

There are also some pretty big differences as well. For one thing, both of them seem to be going for completely different  tones all together; AoT is a lot darker than SAO ever was, and it’s also does not pull any punches. It could possibly be that it’s the new big shonen, or that the main character seems to be sure of himself in what he is doing, which is something that almost anyone could admire. Whatever the reason, there is something about Attack on Titan that allows it to be so well received.

Now, onto the reviews.

With Attack on Titan, they do a really good job at one-upping themselves with each passing week. With Hearing the Heartbeat - The Battle for Trost Part Four, the remaining solders assemble together, observing the new Titan that seems to have no interest in eating humans. They decide to use this chance to break back into one of the buildings to refuel and gather more supplies, although danger seems to enjoy rearing its ugly head.

With the past several episodes mainly focusing on Mikasa, there seems to be some good character development involving Armin. While he is not the greatest at fighting, he seems to be a great strategist, which helps play into his character very well. Personalities of other characters grow in this episode as well, which is something not all that expected in a shonen show. The ending, while kind of obvious, may leave some with a bad taste in their mouth.

Attack on Titan - Hearing the Heartbeat - The Battle for Trost Part Four gets eight stars out of ten.

My Teenage Romantic Comedy SNAFU continues on with the struggles of volunteering at a summer camp in One Day, They Will Learn the Truth. The Service Club as well of several of their classmates are spending a free morning to themselves, but the quiet, shy girl is on all of their minds. They all seem willing to help her, but Hachiman seems to be the only one who understands what she really needs.

It’s hard to figure out exactly what the show is trying to say with this episode. Everything moves a bit quicker than usual, and it seems that many things are lost. While they do find a resolution to their problem, it still doesn’t quite feel satisfying to the audience. It feels as though that the creators knew that it needed to have a happy ending, but didn’t quite know how to pull it off.

My Teenage Romantic Comedy SNAFU - One Day, They Will Learn the Truth gets five stars out of ten.

Continuing on from the ending of last week’s Flowers of Evil, 8 of 13 shows the aftermath of the decision that Kasuga made. After cleaning himself off, he now starts to feel guilty about what he did to the classroom. When he is forced to face it however, there seems to be something that aids his luck, but also just causes him to feel more guilt.

This particular episode seems to have taken the most risks than any other episode all season. With the first half almost completely lacking in dialogue, it allows the audience to soak in the uneasy feeling between Kasuga and Nakamura. It also prepares the audience very well for the darkness that the show is about to enter.

Flowers of Evil - 8 of 13 gets eight stars out of ten.

This episode of Photo Kano is a bit difficult to rate. It seems that Gaze Into Her True Face is copying the same formula as the previous episode, focusing on one of the side girls instead of the main story. This time, it is the class president, Muroto. With the help of Kazuya, she tries to figure out how to balance her life as a person as well as her drive to become a doctor.

By itself, it’s good episode that doesn’t waste any time. However, when it comes to being a part of the series, it feels really inconsistent and very manipulative. It seems that the show is just catering to those who don’t really care for a consistent story and only want to see the protagonist obtain as many girls as possible. While for some that may work for some, for others it shows that Kazuya is unwilling to grow as a person and instead continue to manipulate others.

Photo Kano - Gaze Into Her True Face gets five stars out of ten.

'The Future Diary' English Dub First Impressions [Anime Expo]

$

In a blend of One Missed Call and Battle RoyaleThe Future Diary sets up a battle between twelve chosen people, with the last man standing becoming God.  While it is a very outrageous premise, the original airing (and streaming) of the show proved it to be very popular with anime fans. At Anime Expo 2013, Funimation showed a special preview of the first four episodes of the English language dub of the show, giving the audience a taste of what to expect.

Yukiteru Amano, the lead character, is voiced by Josh Grelle. Though he didn’t always capture Yuki, one thing he got right was the character’s arrogance.  However, when Yuki was whiny or scared, Grelle’s acting style was a little off the mark and didn’t sit too well with the audience. As the episodes passed however, Grelle seemed to become more comfortable and in-line with his character.

One of the more anticipated roles for many fans is Yuno Gasai, who is voiced by Brina Palencia. Right off the bat, many have doubted this casting decision because her voice doesn’t seem to necessarily capture the moe/psycho tones that the character is known for. By the end of episode one however, she completely won over the audience. While many of Yuno’s over-the-top actions can be hit or miss, the more subtle moments are what really chill to the bone.

The true fan favorite of the show, Mineme Uryu, is voiced by Emily Neves. Her character is one that simply steals the show in every scene she’s in, and Neves captures that perfectly. She understands how much energy she needs to bring to voicing Mineme and she does not disappoint. Her voice also gives a certain sense of cunning, which is great for what happens in the series.

The rest of the supporting cast was also well chosen, each voice fitting the character. Funimation has a good track record with dubs, and this one looks like it will be well received. The Future Diary is definitely one that is worth checking out once it has been released.

The Future Diary Part One is set to be released on Blu-Ray/DVD in the US on August 13, 2013.

Anime Invasion - Attack on Kaiju

$

With the release of Pacific Rim here in the states, Kaiju film fans are running to get a piece of the action. The battles are as big as the monsters. At the same time, people seem to compare it to Neon Genesis Evangelion, which had a similar premise. Although there are similarities, it seems that it more resembles Attack on Titan.

It’s a bit of stretch, and doesn’t help that Attack on Titan doesn’t include mechs, but when it comes to the characters and story, it is spot on. Pacific Rim could have borrowed  from both sources (the Attack on Titan manga came out in 2009) but it really is its own thing.

Now onto the reviews.

It seems that the Trost arc has come to an end with this week’s episode of Attack on Titan, Primal Desires - The Battle of Trost Part Nine. Eren is now in control of himself as the Titan as he now is attempting to carry the rock to close the breached gate. The rest of the Elite Squad is there to make sure that no other Titan attempts to take down Eren.

Surprisingly, it was one of the more emotional episodes of Attack on Titan. It cleverly focuses on those who have risked their lives against the Titans, making the gravity of their situation very clear. While this is the end point for season one and leading directly into season two, it was good to see that each major character had their own shining moment.

Attack on Titan - Primal Desires- The Battle of Trost Part Nine gets eight stars out of ten.

My Teenage Romantic Comedy SNAFU ends with a bonus episode, And So Their Festival Will Never End. The Volunteering Club is called upon another task, this time helping with the upcoming school athletics festival. The chairman’s goal is to have it be different than what is expected in order to make it something that is worth remembering.

It shows off our characters in a very different setting and it doesn’t seem to bother with a lot of conflict. It feels very much like an epilogue, showing what has happened to these characters after their journey this past season. It is obvious that Hachiman is the one who had gone through the most change, beginning as not needing anyone in his life to cooperating with others at the athletic competitions. Hachiman, Yui, and Yukino have all become well rounded people.

My Teenage Romantic Comedy SNAFU - And So Their Festival Will Never End gets eight stars out of ten.

Flowers of Evil finishes up with 13 of 13. Kasuga, waiting for Nakamura to return, discovers her bedroom. It appears very plain and ordinary, but he spies a pink journal from one of her desk drawers. Kasuga decides to take a peek into the diary, and discovers the inner mind of Nakamura.

This episode really does drive home what the entire show’s subtext is about, which is the idea of finding one’s identity as they grow up. There are very dramatic moments with Nakamura in particular, showing how much she had developed throughout the series. The only issue is that the ending may leave some people empty; almost like it has no ending. It is obvious that they are hoping for a season two to continue the story, but it was fine being its own standalone story.

Flowers of Evil - 13 of 13 gets eight stars out of ten.

Photo Kano finishes up with Mutual Feelings, this time the episode focusing on Kanon, Kazuya’s little sister. With their parents gone away to Europe for a vacation, the two siblings spend some quality time together, but it seems that certain kinds feelings are developing between them. Kazuya, however, feels it is wrong to act on these feelings, hoping to not reveal another secret about their past as siblings.

The episode plays out like every other episode lately, a lose plot with boring romance. There may be a bit of a turn off because of the hinting at incest (which a lot of anime do actually), but the show decides to quickly clear up things and make it approachable for a more general audience. It’s a cop out that is seen a number of times and just feels cheap. Instead of really attacking the idea, Photo Kano wimps out and proves how tired it really is.

Photo Kano - Mutal Feelings gets four stars out of ten.

Watch a Lot of Anime? Here Are a Few Ways to Keep Track of Them All

$
0
0

So I used to live in a time where I just watched whatever anime was on, at any one time, and really not give a care as to when it aired. Those times were in my childhood. Nowadays, I’m keeping track of way too much anime for a normal person. But even a normal person might have issues keeping track of what they’re watching, even if it’s 6 or 7 of them. So here’s a couple of ways you can keep track of what anime you’re watching, with each providing their own conveniences for a person.

MAL

MAL, or MyAnimeList, has been one of the longer running communities to keep track of what titles you’re watching. You can create an account, have a list of titles you want to watch, and do it with relative ease. You’ll have to remember the Japanese names in case you want to add a title, but otherwise, you can add anime you’re watching by searching. In addition to watching anime here, you can also designate what you have on hold, plan to watch, or dropped, and there’s even a manga list as well. That should make things fairly convenient for you.

Just a word of warning though: unfortunately, their settings in logging in have been bonkers since January. Unless you set your computer to remember the password, prepare to log in all the time.

Anime Planet

Another site that’s been around the block, Anime Planet is the same as MAL, with some aesthetic choices in its design and watching format. It’s ok, you don’t have to worry about problems logging into this site. You also have a bit of freedom of what to add in your profile (you can even add your Twitter), your blog, and a few more things that might be relevant for you. Anyways, if you want to make sure you know what you’re watching, this is a site to consider.

Hummingbird

This is the newest keeping track of anime site out there. Unlike the other two, Hummingbird has been around a grand total of this year (as in, it was conceived this year), and it had been in beta for a while, undergoing a number of changes. For now, all it does is allow you to list what anime you’re watching, plan to watch, etc, with a more refined design than the other two sites on the list but lacks a rating system and a manga list system that may or may not be a deal breaker for some. Otherwise this seems to be growing up and managed by those who want a reliable system, so if you want to check this site out, that wouldn’t be a problem.

Microsoft Excel

Finally, you can just be a somewhat cheap person by using Excel. I say somewhat cheap because unlike the other three sites above, you don’t have to sign up and register and go through lists to find what you’re watching. Instead, if you’re watching some shows this year, you can manually create a list of what you’re watching, where you’re watching it, what day it airs, and anything else you want to include that fits for you.

So these are a few ways to make sure you can keep track of your anime. I bet there are a few more ways though, so if you have any others, feel free to share what that is. Otherwise, happy anime watching.

The character-action game Bayonetta will be receiving an anime film adaptation from studio Gonzo, and director Fuminori Kizaki of Afro Samurai and Marvel Anime: X-Men fame. The film will premiere in Japan on November 23.

For those interested, the credits currently read as follows:

Production Staff

Screen Play - Mitsutaka Hirota (The Prince of Tennis II)

Character Design - Ai YoKoYaMa (Hunter x Hunter)

Angel Designer – Hiroya Iijima (Afro Samurai)

Mechanical Designers - Katanao Akai (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) and Takashi Watabe (Akira)

Theme Song - Mai

Voice Actors:

Atsuko Tanaka (Ghost in the Shell) as Bayonetta

Mie Sonozaki (Strike Witches) as Jeanne

Daisuke Namikawa (Black Lagoon) as Luka

Miyuki Sawashiro (Beelzebub) as Cereza

Tesshô Genda (Mobile Suit Gundam) as Rodin

Wataru Takagi (Detective Conan) as Enzo

Norio Wakamoto (Code Geass) as Balder

Interestingly, a lot of the production staff have worked either on Marvel Anime: X-Men or Afro Samurai, suggesting that Bayonetta: Bloody Fate may try to appeal to Western audiences. Given that Bayonetta 2 for the Wii U is currently in development, Platinum Games or SEGA may be trying to tied fans over until it’s release.

Attack on Titan [Anime Review]

$
0
0

During the past several weeks, Attack on Titan has become a monster hit amongst fans of anime. It was predicted beforehand that it might be the biggest series of 2013, and many would agree with those statements. With all of that hype behind the show, does it truly live up, or is it too good to be true?

Attack on Titan (or Shingeki no Kyojin) tells the story about an alternate-universe where humanity is no longer at the top of the food chain. Giant beings known as Titans have mysteriously come to Earth to eat humans, not for sustenance, but simply because they want to. For a hundred years, humanity has hidden behind walls and barriers and have developed special devices to help humanity have a fighting chance against the Titans, even if it is small.

The story centers around three friends, Eren Jeager, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert, who have grown up within the walls and have an admiration for the military. One day, when a Colossal Titan destroys the outermost walls, other Titans break in to devour the human population, which includes Eren and Mikasa’s mother along with Armin’s father. Being the most driven amongst the three, Eren convinces them to join the military and find a way to destroy every single Titan there is.

The tone of the story really matches the magnitude that the initial premise tries to bring. This is a dark show which is usually taken with as much seriousness as it deserves. The major arcs in the story can run for about 8 episodes (in this 25 episode series), which can be annoying for some viewers. A lot of the beginning episodes have to do with training and things don’t really take off until the end of the fifth episode. The final episode of the show is strong, but ends on a note that doesn’t necessarily feel right.

The show does have some pacing issues, but it can be forgiven considering how a lot of the story is actually good. There is a plot point that is revealed in episode 7, which can feel pretty cheap and giving into the shonen tropes, but it was surprising to see how it was used throughout the rest of the series. The show is really suspenseful throughout as it is very obvious that not a single character (besides the major three) is safe from the clutches of Titans. Attack on Titan has a pretty high death toll, so it is probably wise to not get too attached to any characters.

Eren is your typical anime protagonist at the very beginning of the story; he’s loud, energetic, and always willing to fight. Slowly, his character becomes more interesting as he understands that those things about his personality need to change in order to makes sure that he, as well as the rest of humanity, survives. He is very headstrong but also very understanding, making him a more complex character than he initially seems.

Mikasa, Eren’s adopted sister, is the most skilled out of the three of them. She seems pretty natural when it comes to slaying Titans, which could have potentially made her another “Mary Sue” type character. Her weakness however is what really gives her depth. She always has a soft spot for her two friends, Eren in particular. She is very much their mentor as well as their mother-hen, meaning that she will go through any lengths to get them back in line, even if it means having to risk her own life.

Armin starts out as the “whiny” character in the bunch; always being passive and unwilling to stand up for himself. Like with any good story, he changes throughout and becomes one of the most valuable strategists in the military. He is able to put his mind to work in the heat of battle, letting go of how he used to be and embracing what he needs to be.

The list of side and supportive characters is massive, but that helps with the story. Each one has their own trait which they are remembered for, some more than others. Again, considering the death toll on Attack on Titan, there will be many that will not survive, which leads to some of the more human moments of the show. Episode 23 really showcases this, probably being the best episode in any anime series all year thus far.

From an animation standpoint, everything is done beautifully. The director of the series is Tetsurō Araki, who is known for doing very well detailed shows such as Death Note as well as insane and unbelievable action sequences like those in Highschool of the Dead. The landscapes are incredibly detailed, the character designs are unique to each character, and there is a sense of magnitude when it comes to facing off against the Titans.

The action sequences are one of the best parts of the entire show. Attack on Titan can be recommended on these sequences alone. They are creative, well crafted, and truly suspenseful. There is also the fact that there is a major action sequences in nearly every episode, which only adds to what makes the show really fun.

When it comes to the music in the show, it really does help build the what the show is trying to portray. There are great orchestral numbers in the more intense parts, and even some hard rock songs at certain points that are pretty appropriate. The first opening song for the show, Feuerroter Pfeil und Bogen (meaning Crimson Bow and Arrow) really captures the show both in the song and the animation sequence. It pumps you up, getting ready for what is to come. The second opening, Utsukushiki Zankoku na Sekai (This Beautiful Cruel World), while a lot less epic than the first one, does capture a lot of the harsher elements that the show tried to capture.

Attack on Titan has a very interesting premise with animation and characters that well support it. There are times where the story can drag and even come up with elements that feel cliche or are just left unexplored. Some will come to the show for the action and suspense and feel completely satisfied while others who are looking for a deep story exploration may feel a slight pinch of disappointment, but only slight. It ends on a note that very much says “see you next season” (which has yet to be officially green-lit as of yet), which could rub many viewers the wrong way. As it is though, Attack on Titan is a very fun show that has something many fans can enjoy.

Snake Plissken's Lost Video Game and Anime Series...Escapes!

$

0

Once upon a time the world came close to satiating its thirst for more of the Escape from New York/L.A.lead badass Snake Plissken.  Turns out development had gotten pretty far for the character’s transmedia presence as both an anime series and a video game.

Despite great effort from the films’ director John Carpenter, the late producer Debra Hill, and flesh and blood avatar Kurt Russell, these projects remain detained in pre-production island's penitentiary.

Concept design for the anime series looked pretty cool even displaying a few new and interesting characters in the prison nation of the Carpenter universe.  As for the game, the gameplay released for viewing eyes looks badass for something that might have come out on PS2.  Actually it kind of reminds me of The Punisher video game meeting The Warriors video game, which, oddly, makes sense if video games could actually copulate...  Depending on your preference it could be The Punisher video game mating with Lara Croft's?

But such is the way of the snakebit, anti-hero.  Plissken’s always getting reeled into doing somebody else’s dirty work, surviving most of the way through with a provocative trail of explosions, bodies behind him, until some bureaucratic tormentor or worse yet the President of the United States shrugs him off without so much as an apathetic apology.  “Welcome to the real world,” says Snake.

Is the sad fact that the cult following wasn’t quite strong enough in the early 2000’s?  One Supposes a post 9/11 era when cynicism and imagery of post-apocalyptic U.S. of F’n A. (especially one where Manhattan is a prison) was probably considered un-American or at the very least insensitive.  And Snake was indeed that in most of his endeavors.

It was a time when hipster irony wasn’t enough or didn’t fit the truly uncompromising audacity of this character and it’s world.  John Carpenter and Nick Castle created an action hero of honest, un-self-reflexive gonads.  They were as serious about it as Snake himself; Kurt Russell knew this and embodied it.

Web heat is rising around these projects and it makes one think that it’s going to break out.  Hey, maybe we can cut a deal Snake.  You were a damn war hero, you saved 2 presidents.  We could use a man like you in a video game?  An anime series?  Let’s make a deal.  What do ya say Snake?

“Call me Plissken.”

Chris McQuarrie to Helm Live Action 'Star Blazers' (AKA 'Space Battleship Yamato') Film

Deadline reports that Writer/Director Christopher McQuarrie, best known for frequent collaborations with Tom Cruise (Jack Reacher) and Bryan Singer (Jack the Giant Slayer) has reportedly signed on with Skydance Productions to write and direct a live action motion picture based on the 1970's anime known in the West as Star Blazers.

The show, a recut, redubbed version of the Japanese Space Battleship Yamato was notable for being one of the first animated programs in the US to have a long-form, episodic narrative. Both Star Blazers and Yamato were about a crew in a race against time to save the Earth from environmental devastation in the wake of an alien attack. Aboard a decommissioned battleship retrofitted with FTL (faster than light) capabilities, their goal is to act as couriers for technology that could save every living thing on Earth.

While the program aired in the US beginning in 1979, the original Japanese Space Opera actually debuted three years before Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica. Space Battleship Yamato has already been adapted to film once, with a well recieved 2010 Japanese version that actually outgrossed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in Japan.

With EndersGameGuardians of the Galaxy, and Star Wars VII proving that Hollywood has a new jones for the stars, the time seems ripe for space opera to return. Star Blazers is just well known enough to have some name recognition, but obscure enough to allow for a new spin.

Christopher McQuarrie was originally brought on by Skydance to write the film, and directorial duties were added this morning. While he is well regarded as the writer of The Usual Suspects, he has yet to have a bona-fide directorial hit or make a name for himself without his partners Cruise and Singer. Both films under his belt (Jack Reacher and The Way of the Gun) are modern-day thrillers, so we wonder how he'll tackle outer-space melodrama.

Star Blazers is in early development, and no release date has been announced.

Studio Ghibli Reveals a Six-Minute Trailer for 'The Tale of Princess Kaguya'

Studio Ghibli, the team behind animated masterpieces such as Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away (just to name a few), have released a trailer for their upcoming film, The Tale of Princess Kaguya. It’s kind of beautiful.

This six minute preview for the movie (which you can also call Kaguya-hime no Monogatari if you prefer its Japanese title) is set to a painfully sweet tune and nothing more. It shows a brief glimpse into the life of a small girl, who we can only assume is the princess, born from a bamboo plant. With images that evoke the classical style of beautiful Japanese water color paintings, the viewer is shown scenes of happiness one moment, only to catch a brief look at the turmoil that lies beneath the seemingly tranquil surface.

Directed by Isao Takahata (who also directed the incredibly sad, and powerfully animated film, Grave of the Fireflies), it is probably safe to say that this film will not be all sunshine and rainbows. Then again, Studio Ghibli films rarely are, often times tackling serious socio-political topics like the horrors of war, and the destruction of natural world.

With a track record full of masterpieces, one thing is for sure, if you love animated films, hand drawn artwork in particular, you should keep an eye on The Tale of Princess Kaguya, set to release in Japan later this month, on the 23rd. Oh, and in case you missed it, famed director and member of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, is saying goodbye to the world of film, but before he does, his final film, The Wind Rises, will be releasing in the U.S. on February 21, 2014.
